There was a small earthquake
in San Diego on Friday and my business had been affected. Fortunately, I have
neighbors who were kind enough to notify me. My glass windows got broken and I
needed an immediate fix. In my office I handle so many people’s income tax
records, social security numbers, and many other confidential data. In addition
to this I have very expensive equipment such as two computers, a big
printer/copier, a fax machine and a few others and not to mention monetary
instruments. I did not have time and the time available to replace the glass
windows just yet and so I called to order some glass board-ups. Luckily, the emergency glass service arrived in
time as my husband and I needed to leave town for the weekend to visit his
mother.
On the way to my
mother-in-law’s I began thinking whether my business was well protected
overall. I did not expect a small earthquake to do such damage; it is
definitely not usual. What if Sandra my neighbor hadn’t noticed the damage
right away? I could’ve gotten robbed and people’s personal information would
have been at risk of being used for fraudulent activities. I don’t believe my
insurance plan covers everything on my business. Perhaps I needed this incident
to happen to me so I can open reflect on this and make changes accordingly.
Fortunately during the
weekend I was able to have a good time at my in-laws’ because I knew the glass board-ups covering my windows were very well installed
and protecting my office. Maybe I will get safety glass when I come back to San
Diego tomorrow; that way it will be harder to break during an earthquake or
someone trying to break in. Check out the pictures of my office below, it’s
like it has Band-Aids!
